Day 8

November 4, 2012

Exit to Rim via New Hance Trail (Red Canyon)

Today we got the earliest start of the entire trip.  Everyone wanted to get out early.  Some people had flights to catch later in the day.  We packed up and are breakfast in the dark, then had to wait another 15 minutes for it to get light enough to start hiking.  We had 3700 feet of elevation to gain. There were quite a lot of trail washouts to deal with -- more than I remembered -- but the trail was still pretty easy to follow.

We made pretty good time.  I think it took me a little over 4 hours to get to the rim.  Tom, Bert and Jim made it to the top about 15 minutes before I did.  They hiked the half mile to the cars and returned to get the others.  Leslie's husband, Mitch, was there to meet us.  We quickly sorted gear and got on our way.  I headed towards home, stopping in Moab for the night.
