Day 5

Hike Up Kwagunt Creek

Today's route stats:

    Distance:  5.5 miles

    Elevation Gain:  1900 feet

    Elevation Loss:  900 feet

Yesterday was almost a layover day, except that we all slept so poorly the night before that most of us took an afternoon nap.  We didn't expect today to be too difficult -- just hike up Kwagunt, find a nice campsite, and settle in.  It is about 1000 feet elevation gain to a spring in upper Kwagunt that is shown on the map.  However, once we got through the lower, narrow section of Kwagunt, we decided that we needed something else to do (or else we would be in camp way too early).  So we decided to do a day-hike up to the divide between Kwagunt and Malgosa.

After getting through the narrows, we continued up Kwagunt Creek.  After only a few hundred yards more, we decided to hike up to the saddle overlooking Malgosa.  The route we took was thought to be on the Horsethief route.  It got steeper the farther we went.  After gaining about 900 feet, I decided to call it quits and wait for the others to return.  Even though I was close to the saddle, I didn't think it was worth the effort to continue.

After this excursion, we continued up Kwagunt to a spring area where we found a nice camping spot.
